Cosplayer Posing
Cosplayer Posing is an underappreciated part of Cosplay Photography, not all poses will work for all Cosplays.
To get the Cosplayer into the right pose can make or break a shot.
Some research on the Cosplay itself can really help with your shooting, if I have time I will always look up the Cosplay online and talk to the Cosplayers to what shots and poses they have in mind.
The Shoot above is from PAX and is a example of a good Cosplay pose, it makes the photo really pop and draws the users eyeline to the key features of the Cosplay.
Some of the features of this pose is
The Cosplayer has opened up their body by spreading her legs and arms apart
She has tilted her body slightly with her right slightly higher than the left.
Her Body is rotated to the right and she has turned her head facing the camera.
She is holding her Prop slightly away from her body.
This shot works with her Cosplay and makes for a great photo
This is an example of a good group pose, there’s three Cosplayers in this picture and the shot just looks right.
Some of the aspects of this shot are
All Cosplayers are all in a open natural pose
The prop is not interrupting the shot
The three Cosplayers are facing all each other
This is an example of a Cosplay Pose that can be improved.
Cosplayer is leaning back at a weird angle
Cosplayer is impaled into a strange prop.
My shot is way out of focus.
The best Cosplay poses fill in the frame, draw the eyes across the photo to the details you want the Viewer to see and looks natural for the Cosplayer.
Sometimes it takes some experimentation but some forethought as to what you want the photo to look like and some direction to the Cosplayer really helps.
